Work and Practices of Dr. John Dee

         The rumor was first recorded in 1607. A book existed, ancient even then, that he called “Ye (the) Booke of Arcane Knowledge”…according to its owner, it was a collection of nearly five hundred spells both dark and light. Dr. John Dee (1527 –1609) was an Elizabethan academic…When he died in 1609 his library, one of the largest in Europe, was broken up. A particular of book of Dee’s was not found, but the legend of it continued to be whispered for the next three centuries. It was, perhaps the most famous, most storied actual Grimoire in history.

         In 1939, the famous London antiquarian, Sebastian Foyle, came across a sheaf of papers apparently torn from a much lengthier work. He recognized it at once: A collection of one hundred spells from the legendary “Recipe Book of Necromancy…” however, the pages he found were faint and fragile and they deteriorated to dust soon after Foyle’s discovery. Happily, he had them copied before they disappeared forever. He printed three copies only. He kept one. One he gave to the British Library where it may still be viewed. The third is a mystery, as it was lost.

         In 1993, a dear friend and fellow practitioner of the paranormal and an avid collector of the strange and the bizarre, like me, presented this book to me saying: “I’m not sure what this book is…I think however, this might be the lost volume of Dee’s private diary. Legend has it, that the volume was lost but Sebastian Foyle, claimed to have found it back in 1939. I believe this is that last and lost volume…”

            This is a recipe book of sorts…a collection of spells to call and summon spirits, angels, and demons to bestow blessings or curses. John Dee claimed he could speak with angels and demons. He even invented his own language based upon Enochian Magickal teachings which he referred to as the “language of Heaven…” The book is housed within a special wood cabinet…its origin and maker is not known. It is believed though, to be well over a hundred years old.

            My good friend, back in 1993…said that he didn’t have a use for the book…and that it in fact, “scared the hell” out of him…and if I wanted it…I could have it if I felt I could find a use for it. I accepted his strange and magickal gift…not really knowing at the time, what I was going to do with it.

            I kept the book in its cabinet with me since 1993…and last year I began looking into the works and practices of Dr. John Dee. Then, as I was putting together my lectures and demonstrations…I finally found a wonderful use for my very special artifact.

            As an addition to my lecture and demonstrations…I now offer an actual hands-on experience with this fantastic book. Yes…based upon my studies and the writings in this book we shall actually contact and summon an entity using the actual writings of Dee himself.

            When I was 12 years old…I was bitten very hard by the “magic bug…” I saw a magician on TV…and I knew right then and there that I wanted to be one. I began to read about magic and learn about magic, and I began buying magic whenever I could. I also remember, feeling a little disappointed in finding out that “magic” was based upon trickery and sleight-of-hand.

            I began to wonder if “real” magic existed…and as I grew into adulthood…I found that the answer to that question was a resounding “yes…” My story below put me onto a path I have never drifted far from. Life, has a way of getting in the way of life at times throughout our journeys…but we are all fortunate at least some of the time…at some point on our journey…I am thankful for all I have…and for all I am receiving. I am a blessed man.

            I was 13 years old living with my parents, brother and sister in La Puente, Calif. in 1961 when a carnival set up shop not too far from where I lived. The carnival set up in a parking lot of a shopping center and I remember it was early October, and I couldn’t wait to get on my bike and ride to the carnival.

            I was surprised at how large the carnival was as I found myself wandering down the various allies and midways. It was all like a different world and to this day I can vividly remember the noises, the laughing, the shouts, the smells, and especially the strange music that seemed to come from everywhere.

            As I walked my way through a crowded aisle…I found myself drawn to a strange tent with all kinds of magical symbols on it and a sign above the door that said: “Prepare Ye For the Future…” 

            It must have been early evening…because I remember when I stepped into the tent it felt nice and warm inside. Madame Incarna was a strange looking creature, thin but sturdy looking. She looked older than she was ( as I found out how old she was after we became friends)…she wore her long gray hair in a single braid down her back reaching past her waist, and she smelled strong of tobacco and tea…but she spoke plainly, clearly, and with authority.

            “Come over and sit down…” she said… “let’s see what the cards have to tell of your future…don’t be shy Danny…I can see you’re not an ordinary boy…”  I remember wondering how she knew my name…?

            She told me of two possible futures…and that I would have to make a choice as to which one I would want to follow. She gave me information about each…but I felt confused and the information she shared with me, at the time, didn’t make much sense.

            But I do distinctly recall what she said about one of my choices…and that was my interest in magic. As it turned out, I found out that Madame Incarna had a sister who lived right there La Puente, and Madame Incarna was going to stay with her sister for an unspecified period of time (I found out later…it was for health reasons).

            I returned to the carnival everyday for the several days they were there…and spent every moment I could with Madame Incarna. After the carnival left…and Madame Incarna moved in with her sister…she invited me to visit, which I readily did at every opportunity.

            I found out that Madame Incarna was really Sarah O’Hare, and was well known among the occult community. Spiritualists, Mediums, and members of various esoteric organizations would visit to meet her and to gain insight into the unknown and the unexplained.

            She was very intense concerning her knowledge and she was very selective with whom she would share insight with. She tested them all…and she was able to discern the merely curious from those who had true intent. Over time, I saw many self-styled mystics exposed by her as frauds.

            Those who passed her tests…of which, I am very proud to say, I am one…she gave a unique set of Tarot cards. Each set was imbued with the ability to hear the fates and revealing insight, guiding the reader to share with the client valuable information that could change lives.

            When Madame Incarna presented me with my set of cards…she looked deep into my eyes…and very seriously and with much authority said to me: “There are three rules to remember with the Tarot. The first is always keep your cards wrapped when not in use. The second, you must never read the cards alone…and last, the Tarot can only be given; to purchase the cards is to bring ill will upon the buyer…”

            To this day all the various reading systems I use are based upon my learning from Madame Incarna…and are based upon old carnival and gypsy lore, history, and wonder.                                                             Dr. Dan

Some years ago I acquired a very unusual and…as some would say…a dangerous item. I purchased Sir William Crookes’ “Artificial Seance Medium Chamber…” from an auction house out of England in the early seventies.

I have kept this “portal” to the other side under wraps all these years…for two reasons. 1)…until now, I wasn’t too sure exactly how to use it…and 2)…until I decided to perform my Paranormal…Seance…and Tarot Party Theater…I really didn’t want to make it public.
